Dear Parent or Guardian,
We are now studying the topic of nutrition for health. Your teen is learning about choosing foods in the context of good nutrition being vital for overall health. Developing a balanced eating plan is something your teen will be asked to do, including planning meals and snacks. Our emphasis will be on choosing foods that have a positive effect on your teen’s overall health and wellness.
Some questions your teen will consider as we discuss this topic are: Why does my body need nutritious foods? What are sources of various nutrients? Which substances should be limited in my eating plan? How can I balance the different foods that I eat? Why is it important to eat regular meals?
The topic of our current study is essential to good health. By working together, we can provide your teen with the information needed for his or her good nutrition.
To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen:
Sincerely,
Ms. Herring,
Health Teacher

- Go food shopping together. Discuss the Nutrition Facts panels on foods that you normally buy or are considering purchasing.
- Eat out at a restaurant. Review the menu choices and discuss which ones are likely to be nutritious, such as high-fiber, low-fat meals. Select a nutritious meal that includes a variety of vegetables and fruit.
- Plan and prepare a meal together that includes servings from all the food groups in the USDA MyPyramid food guidance system.
Sincerely,
Ms. Herring,
